“And go through them we shall!” Jaime laughed confidently. If we are to aid your Father, we must go through them.” Rykker seemed to be less than completely convinced, but sighed in resignation. They hope to scare us off so that we don't join up with my Father. His brother is younger than him and no better. “What, are you expecting some master plan here? Robb Stark is but a boy, playing at a man's game. The skeptical hum from Rykker surprised him. “Either that, or the Stark boys wants their army to cover their arses while they retreat across the Ford if they lose.” The Stark forces had arranged themselves with the Ford to their left and the woods behind them to their right the Stark cavalry was entirely on their left, which was reinforced with a greater part of their infantry. Look at the fools.” He shook his head in amusement. “They do seem to have fewer cavalry, though.” Renfred Rykker was a more cautious man than he, but a capable one. “They look to be about our size and strength,” said a voice to his left. The field was a wide plain, with a dense forest on the Southwestern side of it, the Northern side cut off by the Ford itself. Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that the Northerners were supposed to all be marching to Riverrun, there was now inexplicably a force in between him and the way to Harrenhal, right on the Southern side of the Ruby Ford. He'd have to give Tyrion some ribbing over a few drinks for it once they rescued him. How Tyrion had fallen for the Starks' games was beyond him unlike the rest of their family, Jaime knew just how smart his brother was. He had taken to the road as soon as word had arrived from his Father and was rather looking forward to the opportunity for battle-not the least because the Northern savages and their allies had his brother. I must admit, I did not expect this, Jaime thought as he looked out at the enemy army that stood in his way. Tywin watched his brother leave the tent and sighed. “Heads on spikes for those who resist,” Kevan nodded, finishing his brother's thought. Get her and her little brat under control, bring them to heel, do whatever you have to do to maintain order and control.” I have little doubt that she believes herself to have achieved a great victory on our behalf go to King's Landing with all speed and instruct her otherwise, before she does something even more foolish. My daughter,” he growled, “was foolish enough to exacerbate this conflict by a blatant-and rather pointless-attempt at framing Eddard Stark. You will serve as Hand of the King until I deal with this matter. With my son's army at our side, we shall throw these wolves off with no effort and rescue that fool dwarf.” If we whittle down the strength of Riverrun enough before the Stark boy's armies arrive, we can more safely move to defend ourselves when that happens without having to worry about the Tully forces sallying forth to assault us. There is plenty of time for Jaime to arrive before them. “Their army is nearly as large as ours you know as well as I do that speed tends to decrease with size. If the Northerners reach us and we're still fighting-” “Brother, we are spread across three camps. His brother looked at him as if he'd gone mad. Tywin paused at the thought, running scenarios and calculations through his mind after a minute or two, he shook his head. “As I thought,” the Proud Lion said, “The Stark boy has crossed the Green Fork and is marching to rescue Riverrun.” Without a word, Tywin opened the letter and grimaced. Kevan entered the tent, holding a message and looking quite concerned. In spite of this frustration, however, Tywin refused to bend against this defiance the Lannister name demanded nothing less than victory. Nowhere near the size of his army, but plenty to make a siege difficult. By the time he had reached it, it had been fully manned and even reinforced rough estimates placed the Riverlanders at roughly 17,000 strong. Unfortunately, the Tully stronghold where that grotesque debauched dwarf who happened to be his offspring was held ended up being more difficult to besiege than he'd expected. Even with the resistance of a surprisingly well-prepared Riverlands genuinely slowing his army down, he somehow still managed to arrive at Riverrun with around 33,000 of those men, including his best troops. He had begun the march with around 36,000 men, with the intent of crushing the Riverlands between himself and Jaime's reinforcements of about 15,000 from King's Landing. To say that the current situation was frustrating would have been an understatement.
